So I have been getting more questions and I would like to start answering 1, from time to time, here on my blog! I hope its helpful!
Question: So my saddle slips forward when I ride down hill and so I try tightening my cinch as tight as I can make it but it still slips forward. And I just cant seem to keep the saddle on as he has low withers and narrow shoulders! I was told to use a crupper but I don't know anything about one...
Answer: Many riders use a crupper. It helps take away that need to tighten up that cinch more to keep the saddle from sliding all over and making the horse uncomfortable. One should never tighten a cinch as much as they can, there is no need with the right equipment and a good seat as a rider.
You will need to accustom your horse to a crupper before you use it on the trail. If your horses tail is relaxed and he allows you to put your hand underneath the tail and lift it, then you can introduce the crupper. If he doesn't, you will have to work on him relaxing his tail so you can.
Position the crupper under his dock so its centered and sits beneath the top of his tailbone, where it meets his rump. Attach the crupper to the back of the saddle, the "D" ring. Don't cinch it tight. It should be just slightly slack. When your horse is used to the feel of it on the lounge line and just walking around, mount up and start walking. Reach behind you and grab the crupper and pull lightly on it. Don't jerk, as you may frighten him. Once he is used to that, hit the trails and enjoy how nice your saddle will be with the crupper! Its pretty simple and easy to use! And your horse will thank you for not cinching him up so tight and having the saddle slide down to his neck! Haha!
